Scientists tag 2,000-pound great white shark off popular Jacksonville, Fla., surf spot

A great white shark measuring 14 feet, 6 inches and weighing 2,000 pounds was tagged and released Sunday off Jacksonville, Florida.

It's a first for the region, Chris Fisher, founder of Ocearch, told the Florida Times-Union.

The shark, which was named Lydia, was caught in 25 feet of water beyond a popular surfing spot called Mayport Poles, near the Mayport Naval Station.

Ocearch stated Sunday on its Facebok page: "After days of relentless determination, the OCEARCH team was able to successfully tag and release the first Great White Shark off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida. Meet Lydia, weighing in at approx. 2,000 lbs at 14 ft, 6 in!"

The same researchers tagged a much larger great white, weighing nearly 3,500 pounds, last September off Cape Cod. That shark, named Mary Lee, appeared close to the Jacksonville coast last January and is presently much farther offshore, southwest of Bermuda.

It's hoped that the tracking study will enable scientists to learn more about the movements of white sharks off the East Coast.

Of Lydia's close proximity to shore Sunday, Greg Skomal of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries told the Times-Union: "These sharks have probably been doing this for eons."

Skomal added that despite the great white's fearsome reputation, "the sharks have been pretty much going undetected."

People can check on the movements of sharks tagged by Ocearch via its website, and receive updates via its Facebook page.

That's pretty cool. Wish they came up here from California, but don't think they do. We do have killer whales though, so that makes up for it!

Swarming Sharks Close Florida Beaches

Some beaches remain closed in southeast Florida on Wednesday as hundreds of sharks swarm offshore. Some have come within 20 feet of the shoreline.

The sharks have been repeatedly spotted near shore over the past two weeks in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Experts said sharks congregate off South Florida every year in March and April to feast on sardines, herring, anchovies and other fish; before migrating.

One expert with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the big fish are preparing to migrate north. He says they'll travel as far as North Carolina, where the females will have "pups."

Although these sharks aren't considered "man-eaters," they have been known to bite swimmers.

I always looked for the big pods when I was in the San Juans. J and L pods were pretty cool. Got in with them a few times, but they sure make you think if it's a good idea when they're right beside your boat, and they are bigger.....

I'll have to dig up some of my pics....

I was diving one time down in Hood Canal and a pod came through. Now that really scares the crap out of you. They swim up and look right at you from a few feet away, and your air tank empties really fast. You just keep telling yourself, there are no known attacks on man by a killer whale. But when they're close, you know it's because they just swallow you whole....

That's cool. We've gone out when a pod is near our area. Happens a few times per year. So I've seen them up close in the wild. Think I have pictures someplace. My Mom sent me a YouTube vid of killer whales off a beach in Tofino. Its about 80miles as the crow flies from my house.

Found the vid, sorry don't know how to embed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOtntDW0KnM
