1829 A duel was fought between Charles E. Hawkins of the Mexican Navy and William Allison McRea, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida. Four shots were exchanged. Mr. Hawkins was wounded in the wrist and Mr. McRea was hit in the thigh. The cause of the duel was that Hawkins had seen McRea leaving his wife's bedroom via the window.
 
1947 President Harry Truman signed the authorization permitting the Cuban airline Aerovias Q to operate daily flights between Key West and Havana.

1976 Former Key West Fire Chief Joseph "Bum" Farto was found guilty on three drug violations and faced a maximum of 31 years in prison.
 
1828David H. Porter, commanding officer of the Mexican Navy ship Guerrero, was killed in a battle with the Spanish ship Lealtad while sailing to Key West to join his uncle Commodore David Porter's Mexican Navy Fleet in Key West. After Commodore David Porter left the Navy, he was hired to establish a navy for the new country of Mexico. He was using Key West as a base to attack the Spanish shipping lanes around Cuba.
 
1969 Ranger Jim Markette, in charge of the Fort Jefferson National Monument, spent some of his spare time fishing and made some remarkable catches. His most memorable was the largest Jewfish (Goliath grouper) ever recorded. Using a rope with an 8-pound fish for bait and a small tractor, he was able to land one that weighed over 850 pounds.

Fancher, and destroyed the swing bridge mechanisms. The bridge was closed for 22 hours; the swing bridge was never fixed and removed when the new Seven Mile Bridge opened.

1917 Carl G. Fisher, of Indianapolis, won the Express Cruiser Speedboat Race from Miami. His boat, the Shadow II, took six hours and 17 minutes to cover the 161 miles. Five boats started the race but only two finished.

1904 Key West police Officer Clarence K. Till was killed in a shootout with Dutchy Melbourne. Till had answered a call about a disturbance at a coffee shop on White Street that was caused by Melbourne and his gang.

I was in Key West when that happened staying at the Southern Most hotel. The thing the hotel was most worried about, running out of toilet paper ?????? :willy_nilly: We were told to use it wisely......:rofl:
