1992 Police made a gruesome discovery at a home on Southard Street. They found a man who had been dead for two months. His roommate apparently was unaware he was dead. :eek:

1860 The USS Mohawk escorted the captured slave ship Wildfire into Key West Harbor. The Wildfire had 510 Africans from the Congo River area that were being taken to Cuba to be sold into the slave trade. The Wildfire was in violation of American and international law and the U.S. Navy was actively searching for violators.


1898 War prices ruled in Key West. A tall glass of soda cost $.15, lemonade $.20 and beer $.25.:eek: Drinking water was becoming more valuable every day, as the water shortage grew worse because of the lack of rain.



1980 Governor Bob Graham ordered the Florida National Guard to Key West. The first unit, a company of military police, arrived to assist with the Cuban refugee crisis.

1980 Six more boats arrived from Mariel with about 200 Cuban refugees. This brought the number of refugees to arrive in Key West to more than 4,700.

1929 Congressman M. Alfred Michaelson of Chicago was found not guilty in federal court on charges of smuggling and transporting intoxicating liquors. The congressman's brother-in-law claimed the two trunks of liquor were his and had been included with the congressman's baggage, which got a free pass through Customs.


1980 The world premiere of "Assassination: Kill Castro" screened at the Cobb Cinema Twin Theater. The movie was a partially fictionalized version of Capt. Tony Tarracino's life.

ON THIS DAY IN:

1898 Four sailors were killed when the USS Winslow was hit by Spanish gunfire in a battle at Cardenas, Cuba. They were buried in the Battleship Maine Plot in the Key West Cemetery. The dead were: oiler John Varveres, cook Josiah Tunnel, fireman George Burton and fireman John Dneefe.

1910 The first spike was driven in the railroad from the Key West end at the railroad yard at Trumbo Island.

1959 Gulf Oil Corp. was drilling an oil well at the Marquesas Keys, 14 miles west of Key West. There was a 40-man force living on the work platform.

1972 An explosives test conducted by the Navy sunk the cruiser Wilkes-Barre off American Shoals. The ship was positioned so that it would create an artificial fishing reef along with the destroyer Fred T. Berry, which had been sunk a week earlier.
