Jeff Bernard edges Jean Theoret in heat 1-A Jim Simpson Photo
Heats 1-A and 1-B of the Chevrolet Cup at Seafair were nearly carbon copies, won from lane two after three very close laps of racing. Jean Theoret was the top qualifier in 1-A and chose lane one for the U-37 Hoss Mortgage Investors. Jeff Bernard in the U-5 Formulaboats.com stayed with him for three laps, in spite of a bad ho in turn one of lap two which cost him some ground, and took the lead coming off the final corner.
Theoret said, "It was my strength," referring to the fact that he is still recovering to a blow over accident in the first race of the season at Madison, Indiana. "I am not driving any more this weekend," Theoret continued. JW Myers, who subbed for Theoret in the Gold Cup at Detroit, will do the driving for the U-37 team on Sunday.
Top qualifier Dave Villwock had first lane choice in 1-B and chose to put the U-16 Ellstrom's Elam Plus in lane two, giving rival Steve David in the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto the inside. The two battled deck to deck for all three laps, with Villwock winning the drag race to the finish line coming off the final corner.
"The water gets rougher as the heat goes on," explained Villwock., "and I figured if I just stayed with him I would have better water for the run to the finish."
Racing continues at 2:40 pm PDT Sunday, with Heat 2-A. Villwock and David will face off again in heat 2-A, with David in lane three and Villwock in lane four.
Good job Jean!!!! Get well soon!!!
Thanks to my guys and vendors for helping get the parts done for this weekend and to Scott and the crew for getting everything set for this weekend.
