See ya, Dock it was nice havin' ya around!

I am old enough to remember him, mostly from my basball cards when I was a kid.

tell us about the time you got to spend with him.

When I was in school in the 'Burgh (an at), we started an annual party in honor of Dock's most infamous acheivment (the "no-no"). Each June 12th, we'd get kegs and let our "freik flags fly", so to speak... We called it Dock Ellis Day.

A few years ago, one of my buddy's (chick buddy) husbands got to know Dock through a celebrity baseball game and they became close friends. My buddy lives in PA and Dock lived in the LA area. Dock was having some computer problems and my buddy asked me to go over to his house and see if her husband could walk me through fixing the computer for Dock. I ended up spending the whole day with Dock and his nephew trying to get rid of a virus on Docks computer (I'm computarded, but my buddy's husband is and IT guy so he walked me through it). I got to hang out with Dock, get to know a little bit of what he was all about as a guy and hear some pretty good stories as well.

He'd become a substance abuse counsellor, but never denied who he was or what he'd done. He had a real good sense of humor and got a pretty good kick out of "Dock Ellis Day"...

It was really cool to meet someone who I considered a "hero" of mine and find out that they lived up to that billing many better reasons than the reason why I held them in positive regard to begin with...
