Mark, I think that Daytona is a good choice, and think 5-10K would get enough watch to last a lifetime.
I've got a basic Breitling automatic, paid like 1500 for it after I graduated college. Appearantly now it'd cost 2700 to buy, so I don't think I've at least lost on it, unlike everything else I've ever owned.:sifone:
Oh, and the kicker is the damn thing is like 6 years old and needs a cleaning, to the tune of $500, so I have to reset it each day. I love the watch, but the resetting thing is a real hassle (I know I just need a winder, or to clean it, but I'm a cheap bastard and saving everything for boat expenses.:26
