This may sound strange, but the best trip of my life that me and the wife had was the move from the east coast to the west.
We were on no timeframe, no budget, stopped whenever you felt like it, or if there was something you wanted to stop for, stop and take your time.

Just jump in the car/truck and drive. Stop when you feel like stopping, see whatever is along the route. Have a destination, but not a real ETA.
This is a huge country, and very different in very different regions.
There was nothing better than being with my wife, and just doing whatever, whenever we wanted, and not worried about appointments, reservations, or schedules.
I've had too many vacations that also turned into a chore because you had a checklist of everything you needed to see or do while you were there.
Having NO schedule, and maybe an ultimate destination with no particular reason... I'd love to do it again.

Thats funny you come up with that Idea. One of your favorite vacations is when we drove to Florida. We were both on summer break from college. We wound up seeing the whole state. Spent almost 3 weeks down there. It was the best!! No plans we just woke up and decided what to do. By the end we were happy to leave. Never thought I would get tired of that place...

another cool non-tropical trip would be from monterey, ca up hwy 101 to astoria, or. Probably the most scenic trip i've ever taken. I've been all over the world, and across country a half dozen times.

if you like to dive & want a cool safe place to go grand cayman was great!! we dove every morning & spent the day exploring on our scooter. extremely low crime & low traffic away from town was so relaxing!
