opinions on Michael Vick

First off, by making a post with an opinion and asking what others opinions are, I don't consider that trolling and it is wrong for a moderator to come out and blast him like that.

secondly on the issue of Dog fighting. I can give you first hand experience as a pit bull owner and someone that goes to shelters and schools to educate people on the history of the dog fight.

Like horse racing, many years ago dog fighting was known as a gentleman's sport, wealthy land owners would test their dogs "gameness" it doesn't make it right (but most of them were slave owners as well, a diff thread) but the dogs were treated in as humane manner as possible, as they were prized animals, the same as a race horse or any prize stock. There were many different types of dogs that were used in fighting, and everyone was trying to breed the best dog for strength and aggressiveness. Keep in mind for early pits, they were bred to be animal aggressive, not human aggressive. Also keep in mind that until the bull dog came along, some of the most vicious dogs being fought were st bernards and shepards.

enter today's society and the Michael vicks of the world, he is no gentleman nor were his intentions with the dogs. it was merely a continuation of his "thug" persona that he wanted to portray. Yes it is illegal, and morally wrong, however a person such as himself that had elevated himself to a position of fame and in some peoples eyes a role model. He deserved in my opinion, everything he got punishment wise. It is sad that people view a crime to a pet/animal as much less than a human, as we all know that they have feelings and a soul, which is able to distinguish the difference between right and wrong. There are specific laws to protect dolphins and whales, as there should be for dogs as well.

I personally hope that Vick loses all of his wealth and just rots away, as I don't really care much for sports stars, after having many of them as clients, 9 out of 10 of them( that I have met..) are despicable humans. Regardless of what the crime was, vick committed a crime, I for one would never support a team that hired him, and as an advocate for pit bull rights, I would have no problem standing out front quietly with a sign and my 2 pit bulls protesting them.

I will say this to the people bashing db for starting this thread.

He is asking questions for opinions and debate.
He started it in the right section...off topic
He didnt ask for you to question the topic or his ability to talk it.

if you have an opinion on the topic fine, but to bash him starting it is as wrong...fine way to make someone feel welcome. this certainly is a way to make people want to come over from oso...:nopity:

I just can't understand why a wealthy, successful professional athlete would jeopardize everything he has achieved to participate in an illegal activity that does not enhance his career or popularity. It's a shame these guys become role models.

Those dogs can't win. They fight to the death or get destroyed if they are non performers.

I agree except for one thing. His first post said "Pleasure Sport" about dogfighting and the way Vic managed that aspect of his life. To me, that means he thinks it was okay that Vic did what he did. I don't, and if he really believes that, then he got off easy.

They made an example out of him. Good!!! I am a firm believer in "eye for an eye" Violent criminals who harm both people and animals should suffer the same. They should be thrown in a pit with Conan!!!!!

i understand, but that's his opinion, doesn't make it right. just his thoughts. I'm quite sure that had one of vicks trained dogs got hold of his family pet, his opinion may change.
As someone involved personally in pit bull rights, it is sad for me to see that he thinks its ok, but knowledge is more powerful than anger.

watch this, this shows what man does to animals...

no sh!t!

now all this being said, is there mean pitbulls naturally, yes, after all it is an animal. however any animal can be naturally mean. not just one breed.

Watched it, I've also been paying attention to the help Vic's dogs are receiving. I hope they all make it, and I'm glad Vic had to pay every penny to try and make it up to them.

Blast? Are you kidding me?
Relative to some of the things that you have posted over the years that was downright kind.

In my opinion it was trolling. And that is my opinion as a member, not a moderator.... because I am only a moderator in the marketplace. But hey... if you want to volunteer to perform that service to this forum, I will gladly give it to you. Because if I have to trade being a moderator with having an opinion, I'll take opinion. The moderator thing was a favor I was doing because I was asked. You can have it.

And my opinion is that a guy who makes number one post in support of an overwhelmingly unpopular and extremely controversial person and an extremely unpopular "sport" knows what he is doing. And if he doesn't know? Someone should tell him.
Just because I told him first does not mean that I was acting as a mod, or that I was wrong for that matter.

you attacked him by saying he was trolling, regardless of whether or not you agree. you're wrong plain and simple. whether or not you moderate this section or not, you have a responsibility to show some restraint.

What I have said over the years has no bearing on the functions that founders of this site have set forth, I have kept my opinions in private founders areas. whether it was his first or 100th post, calling someone a troll doesn't set or follow the precedent of what this site is about...

The only fighting my dogs do is fighting for space in the bed. If they are taking up too much, they get launched over the side.

Vick's a piece of chit.

I can tell by the response that this was definatly the wrong post to start off with for that I apologize. I see a bunch of valid points here and that is what I wanted I myself am not a dog person so would have a different opinion of this.

What I was getting at like offshoredrillin said at one time this was a thing wealthy people did for entertainment so I feel that the sport has potentially never stopped just changed who does it. Morally it is wrong on every level.

But the point I was trying to make was that animals get treated a lot worse than this sometimes in things like puppy mills and other situations and the charges do not take everything a person has and throw them in federal prison for 2 years and potetially state prison also.

Also as I followed the trail it was said that he loved the dogs that won and treated them like you guys said you treat your dogs. I actually don't think he personally killed any dogs he ordered some killed when found out they would not make it otherwise. Like I said it was morally wrong on every level but the lady down the street from me who had a hundred cats in her house and the animal control came in still has her house and is not in prison and that to is morally wrong because she had cats dying long drawn out deaths and poor living conditions.

I think vick along with probably all other professional athletes is arrogant and should be a role model and should of gave up his old life but could not let it go.

For the record I do not hunt and could never kill a dog or probably any other animal but I do love steak and cheesburgers.

Sooo........... do you have a boat?

Off topic hi-jacker!

Vick-

Personal opinion: is put him back on the field and let Buddy Ryan coach the other team for a day. A nice high-low to see if they can break some bones would be fitting.

Reality: He dumbazz risked it but has paid a higher price than any of us would

Marcus Vick is a thug as well. Common trash that had a way out and ruined it vs being role models
